Huntsmith Check Cord — 20 ft.
A check cord is one of the most important tools in a gun dog trainer's kit. Done right, it keeps you connected to your dog while giving them the freedom to work — and that balance is everything in the field.
This rope is manufactured specifically for the Huntsmith family (Rick & Ronnie Smith), and it's the most favored check cord we use at QK Dogs.
Why this one?
Stiffness matters more than most people realize. The stiffer the cord, the easier it is to keep it up and out of your dog's feet and legs while you're check cording them into birds. A limp, floppy rope tangles. This one doesn't. The 7/16" solid braid nylon construction gives you the rigidity you need to cue directional changes cleanly — without fighting your own equipment.
The hardware is worth talking about.
The snap is solid Italian brass — not the Chinese brass hardware you'll find on most check cords, including some we carry. Italian brass handles weather, hard use, and years of repetition without failing. It's not a subtle difference.
More importantly: it's attached right. With a hand-tied a bowline knot, soaked, then the wet rope under is stretched with an electronic hoist to set the knot under tension. When it dries, that connection is nearly impossible to break. The snap isn't going anywhere.
What you'll use it for:
Check cords are essential for yard work — here, whoa, quartering patterns, and the foundational commands that make everything else possible. They let you stay connected and guide your dog while they're still learning to work at a distance.
